Plain DXVA with hw decoding/acceleration is perfect. No banding. Can't tell about black levels right now as its very sunny (HK) so ambient light levels are high. Software and Pixel Shaders have banding. That ties in with my findings wrt VLC where turning of hw decoding introduces banding.

My settings are :
XBMC (full/limited) -> Intel HD Input (full) -> Intel HD Output (full) -> Samsung (full)

Doesn't seem to make much difference if XBMC is limited or full.

Btw, one thing to note for those seeing washed out blacks - set your Intel GPU and your TV to full range. I don't see washed out blacks - just rendering/banding issues on AVS HD Grayscale and slightly lower black levels then other players like MPC-HC/MadVR.

See here for more info on Intel HD settings for full range :

As per my prev post, XBMC Gotham DXVA is the only one that works well. No banding issues albeit i havent been able to confirm black levels yet.

Edit: Scratch DXVA working. Just did a quick check on black levels and they are elevated all the way from 0 -> xx. I used to get this on Frodo too. Onlly way I can get normal black levels is to change Intel GPU to Input (limited) which seems the wong thing to do. Confirmed its the wrong setting as the grayscale banding is back Sad

To summarise (all testing via AVS HD mp4 patterns):

XBMC (full/limited) -> Intel HD Input (full) -> Intel HD Output (full) -> Samsung (full)

1) Software/Pixel shaders - Grayscale banding, Black levels ok (not 100% certain they are perfect but at least not elevated across the whole range)
2) DXVA - Grayscale no banding but black levels < 16 grey. Black levels elevated so washed out videos
3) DXVA-HD - Grayscale banding. Black levels not quite as good as other renders (MPC-HC/MadVR) or Raspbmc
