If the Chromestick is any indicator, this thing is not going to be as easy to root and load your own stuff on as you guys might think. Hats off to those who try though.

Chromestick? This would be closer to a Chromebook with standard PC hardware inside. The Internet is full of howtos on putting Linux on Chromebooks so I'm guessing it will not be too much trouble.

No IR receiver...

Chromestick? Do you mean Chromecast? If so - that's a very different beast. It's not a full ChromeOS device unlike the Chromeboxes and Chromebooks.

The Asus Celeron Chromebox looks to be near identical to the Acer C720 Chromebook in spec terms (C2955U CPU, 16GB M.2 SSD, 2GB RAM etc.) though with RAM upgrade possibilities and built in GigE? The C720 is very easy to put into Developer mode, and has a Legacy BIOS that allows you to boot standard Linux distros.

I've got my Acer C720 Chromebook running ChromeOS, Ubuntu and OpenElec (the former two on a 128GB SSD I installed, the latter runs from a USB3 Flash drive) Recent Gotham OpenElec builds work very well indeed on the C720 (1080p, 1080i with decent de-interlacing, HD Audio bit streaming over HDMI etc.) It's a great little travel HTPC (HDMI into Hotel room TV, TV Headend with a USB DVB-T2 tuner etc.)!

The only downside to the C720 build is that when you boot you have to press CTRL+L to get to the legacy BIOS - though I believe some ChromeOS devices can have a BIOS reflash to remove the need for this.

Are there any issues installing EventGhost on a device like this? I like to send network broadcast commands from my remote that EventGhost then translates into XBMC commands.

Yea, fairly recently it was discovered that we can alter the Coreboot behavior to shorten the 'scary' Dev splash screen timeout from 30 seconds to 1 (or was it 2 seconds) and default to the legacy SeaBios so that pressing Ctrl-L is no longer required... Good stuff indeed.

I'm very satisfied with my Acer C720 chromebook (running linux), that I've pre-ordered the Asus Chromebox with the plans of doing the same for a full featured linux X desktop (to run XBMC of course).

These new Haswell based chromebox's should make excellent XMBC frontends.

I'm thinking of picking one of these up to run XBMC (and host a MySQL library) and a sabNZBD/sickbeard/couchpotato setup. Would the basic $180 version suffice for this or should I think of springing for the Core i3 model?

I'm not clear on whether you have to press CTRL-L every time you boot to something other than ChromeOS or can it be set to default to booting from a usb drive?
