Android Transcoding
#1
Hello, so I have been watching this thread as I do feel it is the holy grail for making xbmc the end all be all to home media center. Unfortunately I can't get serverwmc to work perfectly with my android clients. Ultimately I think that all of the android set top boxes out there right now require transcoding to really have tv work great and because of this I went looking for just that. It just so happens that there is another developer on xbmc that was doing something very similar for the last year. He has done an amazing job of using VLC to transcode streams in the background on the windows host machine.
Here is a link to his addon.

The addon works on android, but I have found that his pvr does not. So I am coming back here to see if this project could leverage the same type of code. The integration of your EPG(wmc) with this type of option to do direct streaming or to transcode to clients (or remote locations) would have everything it needs to establish serverwmc as THE pvr for xbmc.

I hope this catches your interest as the transcoding through vlc that he has setup works perfect.

You aren't the first to request this. Unfortunately for two guys who have plenty to do already, this sounds like a lot of work. I was kind of hoping to satisfy the trans-code crowd by working with mediabrowser, have you looked into their stuff?

I have looked at Media browser. In fact right now I'm still a little bit in transition. I am wanting to go full android, but I am currently setup with wmc and xbox360s on all other tvs (using MB3 as my main media slinging and a ceton for live tv). Power requirements and capabilities (streaming) have taken me down the xbmc path, and while I know that mb3 has plugins and separate android clients(which I have already purchased), I really want to have one interface that rules all. This increases the WAF factor greatly.

I know it could be a pretty big project to take on, but I will say that looking at what he did with the script for the transcode it was actually pretty simplistic. He has a similar server that sets up constructs of the tuners and their availability, and then beyond that it is very simple script that passes the transcode through vlc called by whichever client kicks it off.

BTW thanks for the response, and I really do love what you have done with serverWMC, it bridges a huge gap through a creative idea.
