Raspberry Pi video file types
#1
I am thinking of buying a Raspberry Pi to run XBMC and use it just as a media centre.
I have read that the Raspberry Pi can only play H.264 files.
Is this true?
How can I get it to play AVI, Mpeg, Xvid or DivX files?
Or is there another piece of hardware that I should look out for?
Thanks for any replies.

You can purchase very cheaply mpeg2 codec from rpi website.

Most SD material should be fine via cpu.

Thanks,

However I have quite a few HD files so if it can't handle these I am out!

So you have HD files that are not encoded in h264?

Frankly I have never been sure if RPi does or doesn't do divx in hardware (which is mpeg4, but a different standard than h264).

Do you have a sample file I could try out for you?

According to this, recent versions of Divx are supported up to 1080p, but older versions may not be supported:

Divx is pretty much the same thing as xvid isn't it? Which is opensource. I think I remember being able to play divx with only xvid installed in the past.

If you wanna test http://www.divx.com/en/devices/profiles/video

Tested Sintel DivX Plus HD (MKV) 1920x1080. Works perfectly in openelec
