Win Can you force a USB drive to always use the same drive letter?
#1
Hi there-.... got a strange problem..

I have much of my collection on various 2TB drives. I do not always have them plugged in. What I do I scan them into the library, then I can switch them on or off as I wish. (I uses a prefex in the naming system to group them so I know watch one to turn on)

Anyway, that was the plan.

The problem is that when I reboot the computer sometimes when the drive initializes it uses a different drive letter. So all the library data can not find it. So I though.. no problem. I'll connect to them though the netwrok share that is constant.. but again.. no dice... as each time I scan the library it rescans everything and I end up with 2 copies in the library for each film.

So is there a way to force windows7 to assign the same drive letters to specific usb external drives?

I know it'll change the driver letter, but no idea if it'll stick long term.

If you name the filesystem on the drive, you may be able to get it always on the same drive letter - I haven't tried this, but some observations suggest that combining this with some of the suggestions in the linked thread might help.

USBDLM runs as Win32 service under Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7/8 and Server 2008 (R2). An x64 version for the x64 Edition of Windows is available too.
