This is somewhat related to xbmc
This news might be much more related to XBMC than you think if the VidOn.Me XBMC builds and DVDFab Media Player are both XBMC based products from Fengtao Software Inc.

As it looks and sounds as if Fengtao based all their DVDFab media players on XBMC so GPL should still apply?

Imagine all apples in the world are poison.
There is a manufacturer that makes fruit salad which includes apples and pears as well as other types of fruit

Are you now telling the non-profit pear factory that they are in trouble or do you just mean this relates to them?
They obviously already knew that - which is why this is discussed here in the first place Smile

But that's terrible - won't someone think of the bananas?

This is at least a step in the right direction. You don't really get much more credible than Sir. Berners-Lee.
Please read the online manual (wiki) & FAQ (wiki) before posting.

I get why they are going after dvdfab, well not really. Instead, of finding solutions to the problem they just keep forcing the status quo and perpetuating the problem they are trying to eliminate.

No, I only meant to point out that these legal issues that Fengtao have regarding DVDFab might have an impact on VidOn.Me too.

I of course did not mean to imply that this issue will affect the XBMC project upstream, and I'm sorry if it sounded like that.

It could however make even harder to get XBMC source code changes from Fengtao/DVDFab/VidOn.Me if they are shutdown.

They never provided any source code changes before as far as I know

You could make the argument that it would be easier, out of spite.

Just got an email from DVDFab. They have started a twitter campaign to bring back DVDFab in the US (like it ever really left Smile) and are using www.dvdfab.cn temporarily until they can get all the misunderstandings against their poor little company worked out.ConfusedBig Grin

They have. We're waiting for their most recent changes right now, actually. Otherwise they'd get dropped as a sponsor :)

Looks to me like it's still business as usual at least for DVDFab. They've moved to new servers of course but they're still pushing out updates and their PR email claims they won't let this misunderstanding interfere in any way with their dedication to their customers.

I know there really isn't any way of knowing for sure what's going on behind the scenes, but this really looks like an empty gesture by the US courts.

@ned thanks for the clarification. No idea where I got that from exactly, but I remember there was a discussion about it lately.

It's not just that the DVDFab's US web sites were seized, iirc the bigger problem for DVDFab is that US bank accounts were seized and US credit card companies have been ordered to not do business with these supposed pirates (ignoring the order forcing US legal will on non US companies & non US assets and web sites). And if credit card processing happens in the USA, as is likely with international purchases even between non US countries, then DVDFab getting funds for software might be a real problem going forward.

Also the fact the DVDFab phones seized US servers, these legal bullies could garner all sorts of details about DVDFab's customers using the fruits of their ill gotten bounty.

For me, the interesting thing is it's only effective protection measures which are supposedly protected in law. Once the measures are broken, as was the case with decss, it is no longer considered an effective protection measure in law and thus not illegal to use software incorporating such ineffective protection measures. I believe this was the crux of one failed legal challenge related to dvd ripping software using decss (but i can't recall other case details). So using that determination, just how can it be that using a broken AACS/BD+ mechanism can still be considered an 'effective' protection measure in the USA? I guess US law can be twisted to meet the needs of the wealthy 1%.

I consider the best ideology is GPL with software that doesn't phone home... Maybe the solution for DVDFab is to release it's source code under GPLV2 and let it run free before it's too late Smile
I'm a XBMC novice :)
