need pico psu
#1
hi community,
i would like to use a pico psu in my htpc to save some power. i am currently using a be-quiet 350w sfx psu, but i think it's alittle overkill for what i need.
i tried the online psu calculators, but none of them list my cpu. here are my components, NO overclocking:

cpu-intel g3420/socket 1150
cpu fan-scythe big shuriken 2
mainboard-asrock h87m
ram-4gb ddr3 1333mhz
hdd-120g Samsung 840 ssd
optical drive-liteon ihos104
graphic-ONBOARD
os-windows 7 pro

can anybody suggest a psu that can save me some power/money?

The 90W picoPSU with a 90W AC adapter should run this just fine. The only concern is the amperage needed to spin-up the desktop optical drive. Otherwise most of the time you'll be pulling 30W at the most.

What case do you have this in?

FWIW, I have Kill-a-Watt measurements with a 90W AC adapter for a i3-4130 just with a slim blu-ray drive instead of the desktop drive.

Kill-a-Watt readings of the H81T/CSM + i3-4130 system:

Windows 7 desktop (nothing running, just sitting idle): 14.8W
Watching 1080p MKV: 19.9W-20.3W
Prime-95: 53.8W
Idle with screen off: 9.8W ( after 15min it turns the screen off automatically and then I let it sit another 15min but it was not in sleep )
Sleep: 1.4W

Iwill S197-H55 (SH-55) mini-ITX case
i3-4130 CPU
ASUS H81T/CSM motherboard
8GB RAM (1 x 8GB)
64GB mSATA SSD
19V 4.74A (90W) AC adapter

I noticed with a MSI H81I it was a little bit higher but not too much. No Pentium-based system I've built since the 2nd generation Intel processor has needed more than a 90W PSU.

You can use one of these to mount the picoPSU in your case: http://www.ecosmartpc.com/sfx.html

one more question-i noticed when looking at this psu there is no 8pin connector for the cpu/mainboard, and only a 20pin instead of 24pin connector for the mainboard.
i assume i could use a molex to 8pin adapter for the cpu connection, but what about the 24pin connection? or am i missing somethingHuh

It still work with 20 pins, but if you want 24 pins you can option for this "picoPSU-150-XT/12.5A 150W AC-DC".....

The picoPSU-120 doesn't have the ATX12VP4 (4-pin) CPU power plug. The picoPSU-90 has one.

You can get a molex-to-P4 adapter such as this:

20-pin will run mini-ITX motherboards just fine.

First of all how do you know which PSU to use. I mean the PicoPSU is fairly easy. BUT HOW ON EARTH do I know which power supply to use. I'm going crazy over this I can't even find a decent guide on the internet. Aaaaaaargh!!!

Power rating of CPU, Optical drive, etc, which is usually use less power for HTPC usages than its rating, and most of us owns Kilowatt meter too. What CPU do you have in mind? We will try to help you select the right PSU....

Okay. Thank you. I'm thinking of using this build: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=165797

Do I need to care about DC/DC, AC/DC, Voltages and Ampere etc ...

Since it is pre-built, it should included PSU and cable. You can verify with manufacture website to see what they included in the box.

If it is me, I get at least a Celeron instead of Atom. This "IdeaCentre Q190" should make good HTPC....

There is nothing else to assemble in the Zbox in your link other than inserting the RAM and SSD. If you like to assemble it yourself, you can remove the RAM and HDD in the Q190 and then re-install it.....
