Ok I have check the codecs.

All the files that does not play are H264 movies with MPEG 4 (ACV1).
Is it normal that the most used coded does not work in the dvdplayer? And if so when will this support added?

Can you produce a sample video that doesn't play well and upload it (e.g. to google drive or dropbox)?

You can find a H264 movie that failed here:

In the meantime I have found some other codec that doesn't work.

The Xiph.org's Theora Video.
You can find a movie file of it here:

Theora doesn't have hardware support (although the GPU can software decode it) and is limited to SD resolutions (maybe 720p with overclock).
You can't play 1080p Theora with omxplayer either.

Other than not keeping it it appeared to behave okay with dvdplayer (like watching in slow motion).

Ok I have tested the Theora video in omxplayer and indeed you can watching it put with some stuttering.
But the movie plays in it. With dvdplayer I got only sound and no movie just like the H264.

What is gpu_mem set to? dvdplayer uses more gpu memory than omxplayer. Try setting to 256.

Ok I have changed gpu_mem to 256 and that works. Now I can play H264.
Tnx Popcornmix for your great support.
