Linux XBMCbuntu Gotham will there be a 32-bit version?
#1
To: XBMCbuntu team?

Will the new distribution of XBMCbuntu work on a 32-Bit processor (Pentium 4)?

Currently, there is only a 64-Bit image on the XBMC site.

I have the latest stable version and it works will the new one work?

Thanks for your help.

The build scripts on github look like 32 bit is still an option.

Technically he is the second http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1675636 and am sure wont be the last, though ya, good luck on compiling xbmcbuntu without any instructions and trial and error, though admittedly, last time I tried the x64bit (and failed) loads of fixes were not in the xbmcbuntu source. Though tbh I prefer and all my setups have been based on minimal Ubuntu for the last 10 years.

I have just installed Ubuntu Trusty 14.04 LTS x86 build on my Pentium 4 system and Gotham works.

I agree 32-bit only CPUs are long in the tooth. There are still a lot around though in people's houses.

I would suggest to people to check Intel ARK or AMD datatasheets just to make sure.

What is the status of offering a 32 bit download of Gotham? Those of us running on old laptops are anxiously awaiting it. Thanks.

see http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1690644 then change from unstable ppa to stable and update xbmc via ppa see Team XBMC PPA (wiki)

Thanks but much more complicated than I have time to deal with right now. Will upgrade when things all shake out.

XBMCbuntu for x86 would be nice!
I use 4 old Penium 4 Computers as HTPC's.
I know many others, Who would use XMBCbuntu, if they would not have to install Ubuntu first....

Unfortunately I don't think a 32-Bit release is on the cards for XBMCbuntu for Gotham.

What I did is I installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32-Bit from:

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/

Then I followed the install instructions for XBMC for Linux on the XBMC Wiki pages.

I also installed the proprietary nVidia drivers (I have a nVidia Graphics Card) from the Ubuntu Software Centre
as the Open Source ones provided with Ubuntu are less than ideal.

If you are looking for a Lightweight desktop environment for a Pentium 4/Atom try the LXDE desktop.

After installing Ubuntu, at the terminal, type:

sudo apt-get install lxde

It is very fast and much better than Unity.

To avoid bloat you are possibly better to go for ubuntu minimal then install nvidia-current and lxde, which will drag in your GUI stuff like X, and then xbmc. There are several howtos on here about building an xbmc htpc from ubuntu minimal, including how to auto start xbmc from boot.

Or just install Lubuntu Smile

The only new feature I'm really looking for is to be able to increase the streaming buffer on my local network and it seems that is still not working as promised in Gotham, so I'll just hang on. Call me lazy but I just want a one-click download, I know next to nothing about LINUX.
