cannot watch movies fluently

Hi, I am new here. Tongue
I have a raspberry pi (model b)
with a powered usb hub, a wifi stick and a powered hard drive.
when i try to see a movie frome the hdd, often happens that it blocks for some minutes.Sleepy
(os is xbian)

(at the beginnig i was using an unpowered hdd, then i changed it with the powerd hdd
and it was working fine... but after some time it started again to block.)

it's annoying.Sleepy


p.s. i did not buy the licenses for the mpeg2 do I need it?Huh

If you need it depends on what you are watching.
Many DVD's are encoded with MPEG2 for example so if you want to watch these you need the license (it is not very expensive...).
You will see immediately if a file needs the license, because when you play without it you will not see the picture, just some bumping geometric figures. Sound is OK though.
This indicates that you need the MPEG2 license.

blocks for some minutes
Are you sure about that, is the pause minutes in duration and not seconds? ? ? ?
Never heard of minute long stuttering.

depends... usually is seconds, but sometimes it's more.
and it appens frequently. it's very very annoying.
please can zou help me? there is some configuration I need to change?

I think that probably i found out the problem.
it's that shitty hub... i bought the powered hub because I wanted to use an unpowered hdd
but since i am using now a powered hdd i removed the hub and now it's working!!!

now i am powering the pi from the usb port of my tv, so when I power on the Tv automatically I power on the pi!
