Advice on optimal audio settings.
#1
Hi there,

I have been using XBMC for a while and am aware that I have never really taken the time to properly set up the audio properly with my home-theater 5.1 amp.

I have my HTPC connected to a Yamaha YHT-294, via HDMI.

I was just wondering whether anyone could confirm the best audio settings to get the most out of my viewing.

So far, I have the following relevant options set:

Under Audio and Subtitle Settings

* Volume - 0.0dB
* Volume amplification - 0.0dB
* Output stereo to all speakers - off
* Audio output - HDMI

Under Audio Output

* Audio output - HDMI
* Speaker Config - 2.0
* Boost volume on downmix - off
* Output stereo to all speakers - off
* Dolby Digital (AC3) capable receiver - off
* DTS capable - off
* AAC capable - off
* Multichannel LPCM capable - off
* True HD capable - off
* DTS HD capable - off
* Audio Output - Direct Sound
* Passthough Output - WASAPI

I am sure that the above is not the best configuration but I am not knowledgeable enough what would be best to use.

Any advice for tweaking would be very much appreciated.

Thanks very much.

Firstly, your speaker configuration should be set to 5.1. Next you need to determine if you are going to passthrough the audio (which offloads the decoding of the audio to the receiver) or have your XBMC box take on those duties (which will decode the audio and then send decoded channels [PCM] to the receiver).

If you decide to passthrough just turn on AC3, DTS, LPCM, True HD and DTS HD. Looking at your receivers specifications it doesn't appear to be able to use the DTS-HD and Dolby True HD but should be able to use the core AC3 and DTS within those HD files.
