XBMC ATV2 shuts down when starting video playback
#91
Anecdotally, I've seen an increase in the number of crashes back to the ATV interface recently. Always when starting playback of an HD file, and only with Movies, TV seems unaffected (I have around 650 movies in my library, using Thumbnail view in Confluence). It used to happen maybe once in every 10 - 20 playbacks, now it's more like once in every 2 or 3.

I could be wrong but it seems to me the increase in frequency has happened fairly recently. I have been running a nightly of Gotham for months, and then upgraded to each Beta and the RC. It's hard to be sure as I've always had the occasional crash and probably wrote a few off as nothing unusual. With hindsight, if I had to guess I'd say the increase probably happened sometime during the betas. That was all a bit vague and not very useful, I know Smile

Interestingly, I have never yet seen a crash when starting playback from the library lists in xbmcremote, only when manually choosing a movie from the GUI.

Logs and info below from one of the crashes today. This one was on the ATV in my bedroom, plugged straight into a small LCD with no surround, so downmixing the audio. I see the same behaviour on the ATV in my lounge which has passthrough enabled to my amp.

xbmc.log: http://pastebin.com/VUtyVum1 (sorry not debug, have just enabed that now and can post on next occurence)
CrashReporter: http://pastebin.com/dzt3WgMJ (LowMemory-2014-05-13-200532.plist)
syslog: http://pastebin.com/VKXCRMdq
mediainfo: http://pastebin.com/J0F6Ygbn

Platform: Apple TV2 (Black)
Version of iOS/ATV: 5.3 (6105)
XBMC Build and date: XBMC 13.1-BETA1 Git:20140511-692cfba (complied: May 11 2014)
Install Method: Installed via apt-get as by instructions on XBMC.ORG HOW-TO. Used official XBMC.ORG sources.
Skin and add-ons: Confluence, no other addons

Hope that helps a bit...

Cheers,
Chris

Hopefully I got the right logs. This crash happened shortly after starting a video. The video had previously played fine.

Addons: Australian Catch-up TV repository (ABC iView, ...)

I started with Beta 3, found it reasonably stable, moved on to Beta 5 (I think), RC, final, and 13.1 Beta 1. I'm wondering whether it's not that each subsequent release has been less stable than its predecessor but that the process of updating itself has introduced instability. Would it be worthwhile doing a complete delete of xbmc (not sure how), starting from scratch and seeing how things go?

Latest crash:

This one happened when I was playing a FLAC file and pressed the menu (back) button. I had recently rebooted the device

xbmc.log: http://pastebin.com/HaB1PC5G
syslog: http://pastebin.com/333YADht
CrashReporter: http://pastebin.com/8qg4Rng3

From the dates of the files, I think the CrashReporter log actually belongs to a previous crash. I've included it just in case. As far as I can tell, this one didn't leave a CrashReporter log.

Do you want any more of these?
#94
I did that (fresh install). See my previous post. Didn't work for me...

@d'Wooluf

Your crashreport doesn't fit to the log files those 2 crashreporters are identical and are from 5:23a.m. both xbmc.logs are from a whole other time.

Based on the syslog your real crash is:

Code:
/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/LowMemory-2014-05-14-202028.plist
AppleTV4/iPhone/iPod/iPad: HowTo find debug logs and everything else which the devs like so much: click here

HowTo configure avahi (zeroconf): Avahi_Zeroconf (wiki)

@Memphiz

Apologies for that. Stupidly I deleted the contents of the CrashReporter directory. I figured that would make it easier to spot the right log file when it was created. Now it's not creating log files in that directory at all.

My last crash was when I started playing a video. The one before that was at the main menu. I can post the xbmc and syslog files if that's at all useful.

At the risk of carrying on a conversation with myself...

I backed up the userdata directory and removed xbmc from the device following instructions from http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=105879. I installed Gotham final, backed up the new pristine userdata and restored my old userdata. The size of this directory is 410 Mb. The first video I played crashed at the start. I then deleted userdata and replaced it with the new pristine userdata. I added some files and managed to start six videos in a row without a problem.

Maybe the next step would be to add all of the files I had before and see how the system behaves. If it started falling over again, that would mean that possibly it was just the sheer size of userdata that caused problems. If it went ok, it would mean that there was some corruption in my previous userdata directory. Does this sound logical at all?

Not sure adding to this will help but I'm having the same issues with regards to the ability to after a reboot - stream a HD movie via an addon, with no issue. The next movie however would crash and put me out to frontrow. It was very frequent on a beta Gotham (I'm sorry, I think it was March 25th or so but I'm not exactly sure).

I ended up having so much trouble with it crashing that it would even startup into XBMC and then crash seconds into loading it.

I rejailbroke the unit with frontrow, I didn't install Nito (I thought maybe it could pull memory in the background or that I had read something like that) this time or Infuse (nothing from atv flash). I installed the official Gotham. I still had the same problems. Zero change.

I was going to do post a log but I cleared the cache using the Maintenance addon and enabled debug and rebooted. Now I've played 6 hd movies and one dvd quality in the same session via the same addon and also using another. It hasn't crashed at all. I've tried fast forwarding 10min thru a few movies and then trying another. Still good. I know it will start crashing at some point but so far so good. Is there any suggestions on what to try to TRY and get it to crash that could reproduce someone elses settings so I could send a log or rule something out?

edit: In addition to not installing Nito, this time I cut out a lot of addons I had previously installed. I'm not sure if this has helped or not.

Quote:but I cleared the cache using the Maintenance addon

god dammit...

We're not touching that. We're not touching any add-on that has anything remotely to do with HUB, xunitytalk, icefilms, 1channel, whatever. They are poorly written add-ons, which is why someone made a poorly written maintenance add-on in the first place. Of all the problems... of course something like that is not going to run well on the ATV2. Hell, it doesn't run very well on a full x86 HTPC, let alone on an iOS device with 256 MB of RAM.
Nevermind. Was trying to contribute back...didn't mention the Video addon I was using to avoid getting blasted... Did not realize that was going to get thrown down my throat. Newbies/Inexperienced people should just not post at all.

I didn't spend a 12 hour day coding. I wish I knew how, I can't. I can do chest compressions and other things so I'm just going to leech off of others work instead of trying to do even a tiny pittance of what someone as stupid as I am can.

Jeez

Cannot post log after crash. XBMCLOG keeps saying something was censored. Pastebin will not accept my post as its too large. I can't reproduce the error over a shorter time period than 24 hours since I magically cleared the cache .... via a different method. ... I did get a crash again after going back to front row and then restarting xbmc and playing Itunes trailers (is it ok for me to say that here?) for a while until the full cache notification showed up. Exited and played an HD movie via an addon I am to uneducated to know if i can say. It crashed.

Is there anything an idiot such as myself can look for in the log to contribute...or should I just bugger off and let the smart people do it all and then chastise the dumb people when they don't contribute or don't know the inside jokes or aren't on here 24/7.

Screw me right.

Edit - I get a lot of Warnings: (yes, post a log...read above, I cannot)

I think it will not allow an upload if your log contains any references to any of the add-on mentioned above. I think doing a search and replace to comment those out will allow it to upload.
Install the 13.1beta1 version and remove the junk addons

Maybe the subject needs to be updated to reflect the type of video playback? So the thread doesn't get hijacked with issue steaming from video add-ons.
Thanks. I will try that.

edit: Apparently the censor issue is not to do with other sources as there are logs on the site that deals with those addons that do work. Oh well. I will try and reproduce with SMB share after running the trailers and see if it still crashes.
