XBMC as Mentor for Google Summer of Code
#1
hi,

i think it would be cool for xbmc to participate as a mentor in the summer of code by google. see: http://code.google.com/soc/

xbmc could really benefit from it.

we should just get a page of ideas together (like for example mediawiki: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/summer_of_code_2006).

Quote:the soc is our program to introduce students to the world of open source software development. last year of the 8744 applicants, 419 students were accepted into the program and more than 80% of them succeeded, which means they received the full stipend of $4500.
some more infos from the mentor faq:
Quote:15. how are payments structured?
google will provide a stipend of 5000 usd per student developer, of which 4500 usd goes to the accepted student applicant and 500 usd to the mentoring organization upon successful completion of a project. students will be paid 500 usd upon acceptance of their application to the program, 2000 usd mid-program provided sufficient progress has been made on their project, and 2000 usd at close of program provided their project has been completed.

2. what is the role of a mentoring organization?
each mentoring organization must provide the following:

1. a pool of project ideas for students to choose from, publicly published by the mentoring organization
2. someone available to review student "blue-sky" proposals should the student not find something appealing in the organization's published ideas
3. someone available to review the incoming student applications targeted to the organization and to decide which applications should be accepted
4. a person (or people) to monitor the progress of the students and to mentor them as their projects progress
5. a mentor ready to take over for the assigned mentor(s) in the event they are unable to continue providing guidance to the accepted student applicant, e.g. take a vacation, etc.
6. a written evaluation of each student developer, including how s/he worked with the group, whether s/he should be invited back should we do another summer of code, etc.

3. how does the program work?

1. organizations who would like to participate in summer of code 2006 should choose an organization administrator(s) to represent them
2. organization administrators submit their organization's interest by emailing soc2006support@Google.com
3. google notifies of acceptance and creates the organization's account on the summer of code site
4. organizations sign up mentors and publish their pool of project ideas
5. students submit to google proposals to work with particular mentoring organizations; google routes to the mentor organization, and the proposals are ranked by mentors working with those organizations.
6. accepted students start work based on their proposals; mentors give guidance throughout the duration of the program
7. mentors provide mid-term evaluations of student progress
8. mentors provide a final review of student work, and each student provides a single overall review of her/his mentor
9. student uploads completed program to google site
