Suggestion for a Media Player
#1
Hello all, I'm looking for a good device to play my network shared files (via Samba and hopefully also DLNA) and as I know XBMC is a great media player.

My only requirements is that it should have good performances via wifi considering that my home network have good performances.

Currently I'm not planning any budget, but I would like to save money as more as I can.

Basically I'm evaluating: Raspberry PI, the only one on which I'm informed. But there are no reasons to ignore some other devices.

Could you please suggest me some good devices?

Thank you.

Edit: I forget to write that real 1080p is a must.

This has been asked several times, you should go page by page and read the titles or google like "Best bang for your buck xbmc" , "Best device for xbmc" and so on then add next to it 2014 and bang you will have plenty of fresh info.

Raspberry PI was my choice and it does what I need.

My bundle is:
- Raspberry PI
- Clear Case
- 5V Power Supply (2100 mAh)
53€ shipping included.

I had a 4GB SDHC (Class 4) to install the OS. Nothing else needed.

Very cheap, very good!

Mine:

- Airport Express acting as a range extender as well as adding an additional 5GHz wifi access point bridged to the local domain.

- Intel nuc XBMC; connecting to the additional wifi signal so it won't clog bandwidth on the main wifi when its streaming TV.

- HD TV/media net cast over wifi using OpenElec on a Raspberry Pi as the server. OpenElec includes the Tvheadend web interface based PVR backendr) .

Works seamlessly, but not that cheap (over $350):

$50 for the Raspberry Pi
$50 for the 64GB high-speed SDHC card
$30 for the R-Pi power supply
$100 for the USB TV tuner
$120 for the Airport Express
$5 for the Cat 6 network patch cable

Airport Express configuration:
- Allow Apple software to first set up a generic "extend a wireless network"
- Then change the SSID of the 5GHz wifi (this should automatically put the 'extended' and renamed 5GHz wifi on a different channel)
- Connect your XBMC front end (and only that device) to the new 5GHz SSID wifi to make sure XBMC connects to directly to the extender
- Media server connected directly to the extender by cable
