HDMI Audio Output Disappears
#1
OSX Version - 10.9.3
Platform - MacMini
Install Method - dmg
SVN Revision - 13.0 (Compiled May 4)

This happens about every three days where I will go to play a show and notice that the voice is only coming out of my back left speaker. I go to my Audio Output Settings and notice that it has changed to Default and HDMI has disappeared. I have to quit XBMC and re-open it for HDMI to appear again. Seems like a similar issue to this thread: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=195149

This never happened in frodo either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks.

Once you have it in a state where there is no HDMI device - can you have a look into the osx audio-midi-setup tool and tell us if the HDMI device is visible there?

Hard to tell because you didn't enable debugging (see debug log (wiki) on how to do it). But what i see is that the HDMI device vanishes for a brief moment and comes back. But i can also see that XBMC openes the builtin output for the short time HDMI is not there and then once HDMI shows up again connects back to HDMI.

Are you turning of the TV by any chance multiple times during that log file?

Seems at the end the HDMI doesn't come up again - or OSX doesn't notify us that it is up again.

You could try this version and check if it fixes your problems:

Yeah can do.

Hmmm I did turn debugging on so not sure what happened. I did turn it on after it happened though. Does it need to be on before hand? Didn't turn the tv off at all just quit and re-opened xbmc a couple of times.

Will give the latest test build a go after the issue happens again

debug has to be turned on before starting to reproduce the issue.

Okay so same issue happened again.

I turned on Debug logging and it was running for about 24hrs before the issue happened.

Had a look in the Audio Midi Setup and HDMI shows there.

Had to quit XBMC and re-open it before it saw the HDMI again.

Hopefully this log provides more information. Because it was so big I couldn't paste it in paste bin so I just uploaded it to Mega. Hope that is okay?

Yeap my bad. For some reason the log didn't copy in properly.

Try again.....sorry.

Ok - what kind of display are you connected to.

This display is loosing hdmi sync for a brief moment multiple times - which is fine because XBMC handles this (but you might see a flicker). But when you are experiencing the problem with vanished HDMI - osx only told us that the device was lost - and then comes back with garbage flags (which indicate an invalid state - something like "display removed and added" at the same time).

Are you using the "match refresh rate to movie fps" feature where it switches the screens refreshrate before starting a movie? Or anything else which would result in a resolution or mode change of that display?

I am connected to my amp which then obviously connects to my TV and have had the same settings for a couple of years and never experienced the issue before until now.

I don't see a Flickr. It's weird like I will be watching a show then go to watch another episode and HDMI has vanished out of audio.

Match refresh rate isn't enabled and the only other settings I play with are obviously the audio and skin settings. Everything else is just left as default.

It's happening every few hours now....Sad

Well it didn't happend before because we simply didn't pay attention to those hdmi callbacks (leading to all sorts of bugs and issues when changing hdmi sources or sleeping - waking up the macs and so on). Now we are listening to those changes - but osx doesn't call us with proper callbacks (this is either a flaw in osx or it is a bug with the combination of components you use).

Sorry to say this - but i suggest to downgrade to frodo if that worked better for you ... or you try this build which might work better (but really it is unlikely ...):

That's okay mate. I'll just put up with it. Hopefully in turn it fixes itself. Thanks for your help.

I had the exact same issue when I moved to the final release of Gotham 13.0. It didn't happen in any of the beta's or the RC. I've installed 13.1 beta 2 and it seems to have fixed the issue. Not sure if any of the changes in 13.1 has inadvertently fixed the issue or it's just coincidence.
