What's the process to upgrade on Ubuntu?
#1
Hi,
I have 12.3 installed and I think I've tried everything I know to get gotham and it still won't upgrade.

sudo apt-get install python-software-properties pkg-config
sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc
*results in installing 12.3

I tried uninstalling
apt-get remove
apt-get remove xbmc xbmc-bin
apt-get update
Then repeat the above process, still get 12.3

Is there no simple upgrade process?

/etc/apt/sources.list.d contains the team-xbmc-ppa-raring.llist

system is up to date with apt-get upgrade and apt-get update

apt-cache policy xbmc shows:
xbmc:
Installed: 2:12.3~git20131213.0944-frodo-0raring
Candidate: 2:12.3~git20131213.0944-frodo-0raring
Version table:
*** 2:12.3~git20131213.0944-frodo-0raring 0
500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu/ raring/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
2:12.0~git20130103.0959-rc3-0ubuntu1b1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring/universe amd64 Packages

makes me think I need to add another repo but there are only three listed on the xbmc wiki, the others are unstable and nightly

any help would be appreciated,
Thanks

Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) is end of life since 27th of January, 2014. Hence there are no new releases of XBMC for 13.04. You need to upgrade to at least Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander), which is supported till July 2014. Then upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) and you'll be good till April 2019.

Thank you. I didn't realize OS version matters so much. I use mint and no part of OS upgrade isn't a PITA. I am on 15 so I'm surprised that I still can't get gotham on it.
I'm installing 17 in a VM to understand this better.

Now I know to keep XBMC on windows platform
Thanks again.

Mint 15 is also end of life since January of this year (source).

The thing is that XBMC uses Ubuntu's PPA system for building and distributing the packages on Ubuntu. If I remember correctly, then Canonical does not provide the option to build new packages for Ubuntu releases that are end of life, hence no new XBMC builds for Raring since 27th of January 2014.

Thanks for the explanation. I didn't realize this. It just makes it a little difficult to keep my Mom's XBMC up to date Smile

Use a LTS version of Ubuntu or mint, or try openelec.

14.04 is worth the upgrade...
Backup anything important just in case then "sudo do-release-upgrade" and let ubuntu do the work.
