Good points about using HTPCs on boxes that are not full-blown OSes. I did not even take that into consideration. One of these days I need to build an OpenELEC box.

if you mean the disksize this could be insufficient if you have a lot of media. Consider all the images being cached to that disk. This can quickly outgrow 8GB
