Failing to upgrade from 12.10 in order to get 13.1
#1
Hi guys, I've been struggling with upgrading my XBMCbuntu base distribution from 12.10 to 14.04. I currently have Gotham 13.0 but unfortunately can't get 13.1 due to it not being available for 12.10. I've been trying the standard upgrade via do-release-upgrade but get this error:

Quote:Updating repository information

No valid mirror found

While scanning your repository information no mirror entry for the
upgrade was found. This can happen if you run a internal mirror or if
the mirror information is out of date.

Do you want to rewrite your 'sources.list' file anyway? If you choose
'Yes' here it will update all 'quantal' to 'raring' entries.
If you select 'No' the upgrade will cancel.

I then receive the following after I pressed yes a couple of times:

Quote:Invalid package information

After updating your package information, the essential package
'ubuntu-minimal' could not be located. This may be because you have
no official mirrors listed in your software sources, or because of
excessive load on the mirror you are using. See /etc/apt/sources.list
for the current list of configured software sources.
In the case of an overloaded mirror, you may want to try the upgrade
again later

I'm sure I've messed up some ppa's somewhere, or something, but last night I received the error but it seemed to upgrade the distro (spent an hour doing all of that) but upon reboot it seemed to stay on 12.10. The list of my /etc/apt/ is:

apt.conf.d sources.list.d trustdb.gpg trusted.gpg.d
preferences.d sources.list.distUpgrade trusted.gpg
sources.list sources.list.save trusted.gpg~

With the list of sources.list.d being:
chris-lea-node_js-quantal.list
chris-lea-node_js-quantal.list.distUpgrade
chris-lea-node_js-quantal.list.save
plexmediaserver.list
plexmediaserver.list.distUpgrade
plexmediaserver.list.save
team-xbmc-ppa-quantal.list
team-xbmc-ppa-quantal.list.distUpgrade
team-xbmc-ppa-quantal.list.save
transmissionbt-ppa-quantal.list
transmissionbt-ppa-quantal.list.distUpgrade
transmissionbt-ppa-quantal.list.save

I know I shouldn't, but I'm really wanting to not have to do a fresh install if I can help it. I have a load of symlinks poking around in /storage/ and can't quite recall how I did it all! I've tried upgrading via usb but don't get the option with the latest xbmcbuntu build - just erase or install it by the side.

I'm fairly certain you need to fresh install XBMCbuntu to get the upgrade to Gotham 13.1

Ah really? Too bad, I guess I should anyway for good practice. Is there an easy way to backup my /storage which exists on my sda1, which includes a mix of symlinks (pointing to 3 separate internal hard drives for my media), local folders and mount points?

You don't need to reinstall anything. Post your /etc/apt/sources.list, it would seem your mirror doesn't exist anymore which means the installer doesn't know where to fetch newer packages from.

Hi negge, I have posted my sources.list.d but don't actually have a sources.list in my etc/apt/! Any tips on what is up?

If you don't have a sources.list in /etc/apt then something|someone has royally screwed it up!

Do you have a sources.list.save?

Whoops - apparently I do have one and am just rather blind! It is as follows:

OK so you are on Saucy (13.10) and you only need one more upgrade to Trusty (14.04) by the look of it.

But really I find that repeated upgrades are dodgy at best. Ubuntu rules I follow are:

1. Only install LTS versions

2. Do all installs from scratch.

Frankly I would set aside a weekend, back up anything important and blitz the hard drive with a fresh Trusty install.

PS or go to openelec!

It's strange - the update happened and stated it was a success but both SSH and xbmc settings claim that I am still on 12.10.

I think a fresh install is probably the way forward as it sounds that I have borked it....I've tried openelec before and loved it on my smaller HTPC (installing it as well on a friends box), but this machine is a microserver and I love the extra flexibility that xbmcbuntu provides.

What kernel does it say you are running?

You should reboot after upgrading, then run the upgrader again to get 14.04, then re-add your PPAs and do an upgrade and final reboot. Reinstalling from scratch is for Windows users who don't know better.

I've rebooted multiple times but it hasn't clocked over from 12.10 to saucy unfortunately. On PPAs - are there any others apart from the standard team-xbmc/ppa that I need to get the upgrades to kick into gear? I tried an automatic ppa-purge and fear that I may have cleared out some useful ones.
I shall check the kernel when I am back from work, but from what I recall nothing changed according to my xbmc settings.

EDIT: If there are any specific commands I should write which would be helpful then please let me know - my linux skills are growing but I'm still a novice on many commands without googling...

To answer this question run the following command:

uname -a

EDIT: Perhaps 14.04 isn't the best option at the moment.... http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=195576. I'd be happy sticking with 13.10 if it means I can get the latest 13.1 gotham for now?

I'm on 14.04 (Lubuntu + XBMC Unstable PPA) and everything works fine including remote. Give it a try.
