Failing to upgrade from 12.10 in order to get 13.1

While I agree that should be the case, many years of using ubuntu makes me wary of updating from one release to another.

I shall if I can! Just would be great if I can do it by upgrading rather than a fresh install, despite the very evident caveats with upgrading, especially if I have done something wrong previously.

Hi
I updated via this tut (post 8) http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=197348
when doing the last bit I needed to add
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
so instead of
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install xbmc xbmc.bin

I did
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install xbmc xbmc.bin

so far bar some little oops's its working fine

Unfortunately I get stuck on the first hurdle, with sudo do-release-upgrade finding no valid mirrors, despite everything mentioning saucy and receiving this at the start

Hi
Maybe your mirrors are down or having issues..... have a look here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes

i couldn't agree more, especially when it is on a dedicated xbmc htpc without anything important saved to the device.

Check what version you have using "lsb_release -a", then adjust your sources.list to use that name accordingly (e.g. if lsb_release says you're on Quantal but sources.list contain "raring", change that to "quantal"). Something is definitely wrong with your sources.list (maybe an earlier upgrade went bad?) which is why it can't continue.

Thanks negge, lsb_release -a stated quantal and my sources.list contained everything 'saucy'. Upon changing all mentions of saucy to quantal it still unfortunately does not update. Errors I receive include:

What happens if you run just "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" does it complain about anything? In general you should make sure your distribution is fully updated before performing a distribution upgrade.

You can, install from the 14.04 installer disc, choose the 'something else' option at the 'where do you want to install ubuntu?' screen and install over the top. Provided you use the same username/password combo, all the data in your home directory should be preserved. Last time I did this on a system, even though it tells you that /usr /etc /bin will be overwritten, the installer does attempt to backup your installed software beforehand.

Sadly, that bit doesn't work too well (or it didn't for me) and it doesn't back up any config files at all so if you have NFS exports, samba shares or Apache configs etc you should back them up before attempting this.

It's probably not the linux way of sorting the issue, but it worked for me at the time.

Thanks black_eagle, shall try and give that a go. Do I need to find a 14.04 version of xbmcbuntu or will a 'normal' ubuntu install work? Or ubuntu server?
Reply

Erm, I did a 'like for like' when installing over the top so in my case that was ubuntu desktop. As I say though, back up any config files you may have, as I missed some of mine, and it was a PITA to put them back. Some of the stuff I didn't think of, like my lirc stuff which I had to redo and some custom actions I'd added to init.d

I wouldn't throw ubuntu server on there if I were you as there is no GUI at all, not during or after installation!!

Will installing ubuntu desktop kill stop my xbmc auto booting, etc? Or affect the performance when compared to my current xbmcbuntu?
Reply

Whilst a definitive answer would be based on the hardware you are running, I would think it likely that as XBMCbuntu is a deliberately stripped back version of ubuntu, and is designed to be lightweight, that the full desktop experience would impact at least slightly on performance.

Also, yes, you would lose the autostart that XBMCbuntu provides, but this isn't difficult to implement yourself. If you have little or no use for a full desktop experience, then I would certainly recommend XBMCbuntu over the desktop version. If your PC is going to be used for day to day activities such as browsing, email and the like, then obviously the desktop version is the way to go.

It really depends on your personal needs, and how 'appliance like' you want the PC to be. Plus, in my opinion, if you are installing over the top of an OS with the intention of keeping all your personal stuff, 'like for like' is the safer option.

Finally, remember that you can always install stuff to XBMCbuntu should you decide you need it and often that is easier than trying to remove something from the desktop version, which can break something else in the process.
