I have seen many times the homebrew serial IR adapters for xbmc , however I think that given the homerew nature there may be a better solution, and I was wondering if anyone can confirm...
I found these on ebay...

It seems that as the port s 5V then one should be able to connect a Vishay TSOP 38238 , 1838, or 1738 as I believe they will all operate at 5V. I k now at least the 38238 does anyway.
The real question however is whether it would be compatible wit LIRC
