The OS is AndroidTV (the former GoogleTV platform is dead), of course lots of unofficial Android boxes have been calling themselves Android TV for some time adding to the confusion.

I watched the conference and it is pretty much the same deal as Amazon's FireTV, it can do live TV but that doesn't appear to be a requirement so you can have boxes that are just like the FireTV. It has full chromecast compatibility, d-pad remotes, game controllers and voice control are all inputs options.

If someone like Pivos (cough) could put together an Amlogic S802 box running this AndroidTV it would be the ideal Netflix/XBMC combo, of course who Google gives it's blessing to on this platform remains to be seen. LG, Razer and Asus have all been given the go ahead, the Razer is a Tegra part (they mentioned on stage one of the chips being Nvidia based), the Asus is probably a Marvell platform.

Sony, Sharp and Philips will have TV's running it too.
