how to get s-video working with Pi?

I came across this thread
http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewto...lit=neewer

Its a HDMI-VGA Adapter with its own chip. Then using a VGA SVGA to S-VIDEO RCA adapter

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331094827750?s...1439.l2649

and then a normal S-Video cable. to connect to your tv.

my question is could you get a better picture quality with a setup like this (on an sdtv)? I know s-video is better than composite. I'm currently using composite with sd_mode 2. the pal version. and I heard s-video has better qaulity

A lot depends on what the TV will do in its various modes.
I've tried out using an old analog TV, for which the VGA input gave terrible results.
I currently have a couple of newer (but still a few years old) LG TVs which have DVI inputs and also VGA and composite - the results from these range (from poorest to best) composite, VGA, DVI
I also have a couple of VGA only monitors, for which I use the neewer connector/converter quoted above - these are about as good for results as the DVI converted.

I've personally not tried what describe, however I have had very good quality when using an HDMI to DVI cable. OK you do need a TV/monitor with DVI! :-)

I think the second adapter doesn't do any actual converting and can only be used on certain graphics cards that will use a specific analog mode.

I did wonder about that, especially as the eBay description says:
Quote:NOTE: Make sure your VGA card has TV-Out function capability.

I did find this post:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewto...47#p274018

which looks like the same cable, and is reported as working, although it's not entirely clear how it was being used.

So, I don't know if it will work, and it's hard to say if the quality will be better than composite.
The sort of thing you'd like to buy from somewhere with a good return policy.

thanks popcornmix for your input, always appreciated. thanks for the article to! the cable is like £1 so its a good gamble. I've actually got the cables ordered for a mini itx build and was curious to see.
