Interface goes jerky after a while
#1
Running Gotham on a core i3 with 4Gb RAM, using WMC as the backend for live/recorded TV & the default skin. When I first run XBMC it works great, but after a few days the animations on the interface become jerky. I.e. I can still switch between items on the main menu at the same speed, but instead of the move being smooth, it happens in a series of jumps. If I quit XBMC & start it up again, it's fine. Hardly the worst problem in the world, but any suggestions how to fix it?

Memory leak or code fragmentation. Check available memory when it's acting up , try some sort of flush utility (task manager does this) and see if you get relief. Try to reduce the size of your pagefile and look over this faq http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Advanced_topics with the subjects of changing the video cache, that's about all I can offer; your issue might not be any of the above, but it's a starting point.

Take care to have the latest drivers and make sure display is not set to match video. (wondering if software rendering would change anything?)

Thanks for the suggestions. I've checked RAM & CPU usage in XBMC when it's acting up - both look similar to when it first starts (~2Gb free, CPU ~25%). It's not playing video that's the issue, it's just the interface animation, so I don't think that the cache size will do anything? I have tried updating the video drivers. Where do I set whether display matches video? Native resolution is 720p.

Cache size refers to the place & fetch of code, with enough fragmentation you will get longer delays in the swap and eventually ends up with symptoms as above as XBMC tries to pre-fetch. Settings>video> playback and acceleration.

What version of OS are you running?
Thanks

Not sure it's pertinent to your issue, but Win7/64 Gotham 13.1 T!

I have the same problem, also with a i3, 8GB, HD4400 GPU, Mediaportal as PVR backend on Win 7/64 running Gotham 13.1.

I'm on win7 x64 (also, I didn't list the graphics card - Radeon HD5450). Will try increasing the cache size & report back in a few days when I see whether it's fixed or not.

Thanks!

I finally got round to testing the cache options, but none of them make any difference. The interface still goes jerky after a day or two....

Thanks for the info - glad it's not just me, but wish there was some kind of 'intention to fix' the problem!!!
