It'll work off one USB port or if your mobo has a sata multiplier port then you can use the eSATA port.
You'll get all 8 drives accessible with either option.
I'd still pick a sata card and big tower over that box though. Too much down one cable IMO.

I have the 4 port version of this. It really is just a bunch of disks in a box. There is a manual power off button, but no software aware power that I'm aware of. Though to my knowledge the disks do spin down when they aren't being used.
