It was here as I read it twice while checking for replies. Now it's vanished!

no, just the lsusb link, but you need to run lsusb with the '-v' switch as I posted, as it gives more info that way

here's what I'm looking for from 'lsusb -v' -- http://sprunge.us/QJGC[/code]

the IR receiver needs to be plugged in after boot so that the info I need from the dmesg log is at the end and not cut off

Hi Matt

Here are the commands and responses

pi@raspbmc:~$ dmesg | pastebinit
http://paste.debian.net/110413/

pi@raspbmc:~$ lsusb -v | pastebinit
Couldn't open device, some information will be missing

http://paste.debian.net/110414/

The message about Couldn't Open was repeated about 5 times.

This time I plugged in the remote after rebooting (which I'm 100% sure I've done many times) a message came up about Detecting LIRC and then
it WORKS.

But here are the urls now
pi@raspbmc:~$ dmesg | pastebinit
http://paste.debian.net/110416/

pi@raspbmc:~$ lsusb -v | pastebinit
Couldn't open device, some information will be missing

Couldn't open device, some information will be missing
Couldn't open device, some information will be missing
Couldn't open device, some information will be missing
http://paste.debian.net/110417/

The Couldn't open device messages have always shown as above

everything looks good in those logs - there's nothing there that indicates a problem.

have you tried using the MCE remote add-on for XBMC to configure the remote? it's in the official repository I believe

I can't quite reconcile how it suddenly is working when it didn't before and nothings changed. I feel a bit stupid!
Very late here and will have to wait until tomorow to continue using and testing.

You've been a great help!
No I have not tried the MCE remote addon, and know nothing about the official repository or how to access it.
LOL I did expect a bit of a learning curve with this but it's not been as expected. The tail is definately wagging the dog.

Thanks very much indeed.
