I am ripping a 3D movie using DVDFab and selecting full side by side. When I play it in XBMC, ti goes to 3D but I have a full width, very thin movie. I looked at the header and it shows the width as 3840 and height 800. I tried setting them to 1920 and 1080 and then saved and XBMC won't even go into stereoscopic mode. Am I just stuck ripping it in HSBS? 3840 X 800 seems really weird.

3840 is 1920*2, and the movie is 800 pixels high, ie 1:2.4. This is not an unusual aspect ratio.
You probably need to play with the headers though. mkvmerge is your friend.

Don't upscale vertically, it is madness, the movie should be playing back at 1920x800. Yes that means black areas above and below, but that is how it is designed to be watched.
I am not sure which header to edit, but there are display parameters and stereo parameters. I am pretty sure they are discussed on this forum somewhere.

Yes, but the movie was displaying like a small strip with huge letterbox bars. I guess I'm better off just ripping at HSBS.

Try 1920x800 in the header.

You want the movie to show at 1920x800 after the left and right images are combined. why do you think you want hsbs?
