This is my file, note the <advancedsettings> tags top and bottom.

I'm not sure of the location of advancedsettings.xml in Openelec or if there is one by default, you may have to create one in which case you need to include <advancedsettings> at the beginning and </advancedsettings> at the end

In OpenELEC, the default advancedsettings.xml file is here: /usr/share/xbmc/system/advancedsettings.xml

It usually specifies sane/conservative defaults.

This file is read in first, then (if present) /storage/.xbmc/userdata/advancedsettings.xml is processed afterwards.
