Would this MB/CPU Combo work
#1
I am considering this http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product...17&LanID=0 MB/CPU combo for an entry level XBMC HTPC. I have all of my media on a NAS and will be connecting everything via gigabit ethernet. This HTPC will have a mSATA boot/application drive (no media) and a DVD drive. 4 or 8gb RAM. Does anyone know if this will be able to do 1080p as well as 3D (specifically, be able to auto switch to 3D as well as send the correct command to my TV to have it switch to 3D)? I currently have a Raspberry Pi which works great with the exception of the speed of the interface. It is a bit slow to respond to button presses etc.

Also if the hardware is capable, what OS is best. I really don't want to run windows because of the cost. I'd like to run some version of linux.

Thanks

This is a pretty old model and also it only comes with the thin mini-ITX I/O shield. It will do 1080p but it will not do full 3D. It uses the Celeron 847 processor. The current version is the Celeron C1037U which is much, much faster. Unfprtunately, I haven't found the NM70-TI/C1037U anywhere.

OpenELEC runs very well on it. You just don't get 3D.

If you want full 3D, this ECS motherboard with at least an i3 processor would do it: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product...72&LanID=0

The reason I was looking at it was the $52 price tag. Also after I posted this question I found out about the Broadcom BCM970015 Crystal HD Video Decoder Mini PCI-E Adapter which will plug directly onto the MB. Of course this will bring the price to $72. Not bad for a MB, CPU and a hardware video decoder. Might just be worth it for the sake of tinkering with it.

Throw in a couple gigs of RAM and a small mSATA drive.

Here is what you are after http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813138393 right? It is a regular Mini ITX however. I am wanting the thin mini ITX. Size considerations.

The crystal HD card is a waste of money as the GPU can decode 1080p.

If you want a C1037 board, I can recommend this Gigabyte one:

Cheap(ish), fanless and it plays everything, upto simple h.265 videos. Big Grin

I have the 1.0 revision, this is the 2.0 revision. No idea what changed though.
All works nicely using OpenELEC, and it's pretty fast too using an SSD on the SATA3-port.
I also run Ubuntu 14.04 on it using a dual boot. That also works like a charm.
