Specifically, this is for windows. My TV is 1366x768, Windows runs at this resolution and XBMC uses this resolution when it starts. However if Windows starts with the TV turned off for whatever reason, Windows seems to report no resolution and XBMC defaults to 1024x768, then I turn on the TV and I'm getting 1024x768. Is there a way to force XBMC to always start at a specific resolution?

You can extract the edid of the TV and force windows to use that, so it thinks the TV is always on and connected. Googling 'windows extract edid monitor.inf' will give you a whole heap of info.

You can also use remote desktop control software like LogMeIn to take control of your windows machine when the monitor is off and then set it to the resolution you want. I did that and now even if the machine is rebooted, Windows remembers the resolution I set.
