I got a message that I was using an older version of XBMC when I was watching a show. What am I supposed to update it to. I don't know a lot about this. I had already updated with Gotham 13.2

Go here, download file for appropriate platform, install.
To be sure (since you're upgrading from an older version), backup your libraries (can be done from XBMC settings) and your userdata folder (done outside XBMC).

Did you update to version 13.2 rc1, because the final version of 13.2 came out on the 18 th of this month. You don't have to upgrade if you are happy with your version.

No. The update notification is only shown when there is a new stable build.
I am guessing you didn't update to the final version of 13.2 but to one of the release candidates or betas and that is why you got the notification.
I would not install 14.0 alpha builds right now unless you feel comfortable upgrading and downgrading and want to test new features out.
