When using my PC XBMC build, I have a pair of USB virtual surround headphones which work surprisingly well. Obviously it's no match for the real thing, but still, they're great for the price.

Are there any headphones that would work in a similar way with XBMC on the iPad? Either via the headphone socket or via a lightning to USB adaptor? Or do they all require special drivers?

depends - are those headphones special like providing real seperated 5 channels (5.0) or is it only a marketing gag that "improves" a stereo signal? - i guess without dedicated support for ios from the headphone company there is no real chance that it works with anything else but the headphone plug and 2.0...
