those drivers aren't for 4th-gen Core/Haswell based systems, and will not work with the ChromeBox

Apologies, I thought you might have been able to extract the audio drivers like this:

you can install them separately apparently, but HDMI audio is still broken it seems

Hello guys,
I read the whole thread and i'm ready to go for it.
One question though: would windows 8.1 64 bit fit on the internal ssd? If not, what should i be looking for if i want to upgrade the internal storage? A regular msata ssd?
Thanks in advance

I had windows 8.1 32 bits installed in the internal SSD and had less 3.7gb left after some windows updates, chrome, splashtop streamer and tight vnc client & server installed. Didn't look into freeing up space.
64bit bit version will need much more space.

The major problem is that IT RUNS PRETTY HOT so i stopped using it and just turned it on for testings. I backed the OS up and installed other OS.

I wonder if running Windows 8.1 from an external hdd/ssd also makes the box get hot or not.

I will buy a usb 3 stick and try. I will post the results.
So far I have not been successful with a Lexar drive, the CB would not recognize it (I was using the instructions from a post on the first page)..

Any news on this?
I really would like to know if the chromebox gets really HOT while running Windows from external HDD/SSD and USB thumb drive

I just set up a ChromeBox running Win8.1 for a friend (on upgraded 128GB internal SSD), no issues at all with temps or fan noise.

I did not have any issues with temps running Windows 8.1 on the Chromebox either, then again, I just tested it under "normal" use, I did not try to stress the machine, or had it perform intensive server tasks. Not sure how it would fare as a 24/7 server with heavy load (not that I'd ever think of using it in such a way).

Edit: Yes, I know I was stating the obvious, just my way of saying that I have no idea what Veronica was doing with the Chromebox to get it run hot.

i'm doind nothing at all, i installed WINDOWS 8.1 CORE x32 BITS twice plus chrome brower, splashtop streamer and tigh vnc server and client. I have a standalone setup with coreboot firmware and stock 16gb ssd/2gb ram.

Even by doing nothing it starts to run hot, the fan is not loud. The problem is only high temperature.

Do you also have coreboot firmware or are you dual booting/have seabios firmware?

Has anyone tested long enough windows 8.1 to confirm this? Any ideas what could it be, how can i figure it out what the problem is?

Probably the remote desktop software trying to capture the entire display and then encoding it using the CPU.

install a monitoring app and tell us what the CPU/GPU temps and fan speed is. Look at task manager and see if anything is pegging the CPU at 100%.

This box I set up is running the standalone coreboot firmware, Win8.1 Enterprise x64, 128GB SSD, 4GB ram. Box is running various background server apps, plus used as a lightweight desktop - web browsing, photoshop, office, etc. CPU temps were in the 50°-60°C range, and the fan was usually around 30% (forget the exact RPM speed)
