Region free Blu-ray playback
#1
Story: Wife purchased the Pulp documentary Blu-ray which is Region B. My PS3 is apparently locked to Region A. I have a PC build with a DVD drive in it running XMBC via OpenELEC (but can install Linux and official XBMC if needed), but no Blu-ray drive for any of my computers.

Question: If I purchase a Blu-ray drive such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6827136268 can install it in my XBMC box can I instantly enjoy playing both DVD and Blu-ray regardless of region?

No as XBMC does not have the means to decrypt retail Blu-Ray discs, however there are external solutions which will allow playback within XBMC however this will be without menus.

So much for the cheap and easy way out. Smile Damn you region locking!

One day like dvdcss was eventually supported by xbmc, in future kodi (may or not) support libaacs. I wouldn't hold my breath.

Nothing stopping you ripping the bluray with makemkv or similar and playing it back in XBMC, though. A USB BR reader is cheap and effective.

You can use makemkv's libaacs to play back blurays. However I prefer to rip to mkv.

Xbmc does use libaacs - if the bluray has older aacs encryption you might get away with using the vlc method (google "vlc bluray"), if it has newer aacs or bd+ encryption you need makemkv (which is free while in beta). http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=173474
