Sorry, I forogot to mention the step about installing 14.0 on Ubuntu 12.04. I did that step, and had no stutter. Kodi Helix worked fine on 12.04, but not on 14.04.
I will look into getting rid of Compiz.

I see a list of windows managers that are not composting. Is there one that plays nice with Kodi?

I also guess issue with 3.13 kernel, related to the hda sound driver. An upgrade to 3.15.x or 3.16 could show that... But one step after the other.

I installed and ran Kodi through Fluxbox, and still recieved the stutter.
How do I find out what kernel I did have.
This is my current kernel info:
3.13.0-35-generic #62-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 15 01:58:42 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
You mention the sound driver, but didn't changing from Pulseaudio to Alsa handle that issue?

Using cat /proc/version I got:
Linux version 3.13.0-35-generic (buildd@panlong) (gcc version 4.8.2 (Ubuntu 4.8.2-19ubuntu1) ) #62-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 15 01:58:42 UTC 2014
Should I try another command?

No it just tells that you use 3.13 kernel which we think has that bug.

That's even the trusty(!) kernel you are running there on 12.04 ...

So I take it the kernel is not the problem?

Yes it could be a kernel problem as you are still using 3.13.
