Android PVR backend in North America
#1
Hi,
I am still new to xbmc, have a matricom mx2 box running SPMC and wanted to see is I can use my synology 112 to record TV shows. I emailed synology support to see which DVD is compatible with my nas and this is what I got
" Thank you for contacting Synology Support.

Unfortunately the DVB-T standard isn't supported within north america, the north american standard is ATSC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATSC_tuner so you will not be able to record."

So does this mean I can't have a pvr backend with my xbmc to record shows?

Thanks, Vineet

Sure you can have a backend but this won't be the Synology.

You find the list of PVR bachends on top of this page: http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=167
TVH, VDR (VNSI), MythTV are popular on Linux systems, choose one the others if you prefer Windows. Then you need a tv card which is capable of ATSC and supports the OS.

Many NAS products are running Linux so users can use them as a PVR backend too. Maybe this is true for Synology as well but they simply never have tested ATSC and don't officially support it.

Visit this page for a list of Linux ready ATSC Devices: http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATSC_Devices
Take this as an example: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr850.html, approx. $60, plug it in some Linux Box, install TVH, VDR + VNSI, or MythTV and you have your PVR backend.

U.S.?

Only backend I've had success with in the U.S. is ServerWMC.

Update: found this. Looks like Synology plug-in will work, but you don't get any guide data for U.S.

I have used serverWMC very simple and works well, and Argus TV which is significantly harder to set up but has much more control of scheduling.

EDIT: looks like ServerWMC is windows only Sad
jayleekay- do you use your synology with DVB in USA? also what model is your synology? Mine is 112 and I want to ensure DVB would work on it.
