It'll only take a couple of minutes :-)

I store the tar files in /storage and if I want to change versions I copy the one I want into /storage/.updates and reboot.

Bingo.

I rolled back to 4.0.7 and changed the OpenELEC Network setting to 'Wait for network before starting XBMC' and left the default at 10 sec.

Works like a charm now. The DMC software picks it up as UPnP after every reboot.

Thanks, nickr and thanks for the different method of updating, too. That was a lot easier.
