OpenELEC wifi dongle
#1
Hi Friends,

I'm installing OpenELEC on a friend's Pi, but we need to use a wifi dongle.

Do you know a model that would work Out-Of-Box?

Thanks in advance.

I think most should work. When I needed WiFi I just took the one from my SamsungTV ("special" Samsung USB dongle - special only because they want to rip you off) and it just worked. But if your friend is serious with using Kodi on the PI and also wants to be able to stream high bitrate videos from a NAS, he should think about getting some of these PowerLAN thingies (network over power plug)

This one looks interesting with its built in hub

This one would work fine though and cheap

I use Edimax micro USB dongles for my pi's. They work great. I can stream HD without issues. The model is ew-7811UN.

It's plug and play and very small and discrete. Just make sure to disable the "wired" connection in the OpenElec config. I did this just recently and it seems like it sped up my wireless connection.

I have been using this one for awhile with no problems:

Picked it specifically because it is n300 and not just n150 so I don't have to worry about higher bit rate files choking it.

Ralink RT5370 using a Static IP configured from within System -->> Openelec.

I even use it without the Antenna, as my Wireless router is pretty close.

Cuts down on the Openelec reboot and initial connect time with a Static IP. For some reason DHCP (Auto) did not connect reliably on reboot for me.

More investigation and this will likely be a tip for all those having WiFi connection issues.

I have a Raspberry Pi B+, the one with 4 USB ports.
My connection issues went away when I put the FLIRC and Bluetooth dongles on the USB ports closest to the ethernet port and the WIFI N dongle farthest away from the Ethernet port.

Must have been some sort of interference issue or maybe a bug in the Pi ?
Don't know.
Happy now tho.

I've given up using the RT5370 as it operates in the 2.4Ghz band and I get interference from a nearby Microwave oven when it operates in my apartment. I would only recommend one that uses the 5Ghz band for this very reason.

The RT5370 just works when I used it. Use Openelec settings that are found in Kodi > Programs > Openelec Settings
No extra drivers needed.

Why are you using such an old version of Openelec, v5.0.1 is a nice speedy upgrade for the RPi ?
