XBMCbuntu - boot into correct resolution with TV turned off.
#1
Currently I'm experimenting with XBMCbuntu. Everything works OK, except when I boot my system with my TV off it boots into a black screen. How can I make the system boot into the correct resolution (720p/60) with the TV off, so that I could turn the TV on later and use my XBMC installation?
I've googled and found out that I need to create xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/ dir but how can I create this file on my system? Technical details in my signature.
System image: xbmcbuntu-13.0~gotham_amd64.iso.

Kernel 3.17 rc5 + DRM kms helper.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Could you please explain those cryptic words?Huh

You need to use kernel 3.17-rc5 or newer version.

Then you need to use drm_kms_helper module in combination with grub to override the EDID and force the output to enable.

So creating /etc/X11/xorg.conf file won't help?

Nope, not for: AMD A4-3300 + AsRock A75M-ITX

Please allow me to piggyback here. I'm having the exactly same problem at times, just with a different set of hardware: Intel NUC Haswell i5.
I tried kernel 3.17-rc5 on my minimal ubuntu but that wasn't stable at all, so the above solution is probably not (yet?) an option.

Is there another solution for my hardware?

No solution for the NUC available, because of this non fixed bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82349

OK. Thanks!

Just thinking, is there a possibility to adapt the xbmc upstart script to wait for a specific HDMI slot being connected, similarly to waiting for the network to be up when you use a MySQL database?

How can I install this kernel 3.17-rc5 on XBMCbuntu properly?

Code:
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc6-utopic/linux-headers-3.17.0-031700rc6-generic_3.17.0-031700rc6.201409211935_amd64.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc6-utopic/linux-headers-3.17.0-031700rc6_3.17.0-031700rc6.201409211935_all.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.17-rc6-utopic/linux-image-3.17.0-031700rc6-generic_3.17.0-031700rc6.201409211935_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i *3.17*deb

Make sure to really download all those three files.

Then continue here. http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1685301

Make sure you do those steps with everything booted with the equipment turned fully on!

Thanks. Alas, having done everything described here and in that other topic, I still have no success. After the system boots up, the image on my TV is present but it's all messed up: all red and unfocused. At the same time Win 7 boots correctly when the TV is turned off.
I guess Linux is simply is not for me.Sad

yeah, that might be the simple reason :-)
