as in external/dedicated Gfx card? ->nvidia
for cpu integrated both intel and AMD work usually work fine with OSS drivers, but both can have issues in some special use cases.

yes dedicated card. i have a amd cpu/gpu but not happy with the performance. Nvidia was my 1st thought also for a card. i was much happier when i had my nvidia card on my 1st htpc build.

Just go nvidia for a discrete GPU, it doesn't have to be anything powerful, so a gt520 or gt610 would be fine.
