Making cheap use of the ASRock CIR Header old MB's and possibly newer models

TL;DR - Wiring for cheap ($5 and under) CIR IR module for ASRock MB's and RC6 remotes

This was all pieced together from various sites.

While waiting for Inteset's new IR module that can wake from S5 since they stopped selling the ASRock CIR module they produced I stumbled upon a blog post showing how to use a simple IR module, specifically the tsop4838, to work with the CIR header on the motherboard of ASRocks. (First link)

I ran to the local radio shack and grabbed one, wired it up and plugged it into what I thought was the CIR port since it was written on the mb. I was mistaken, and the header was not added and only the contacts were visible next to the USB 6_7 port. Apparently ASRock stopped adding the cir port to the 1150 and newer series MB's but instead moved it to the IRDA port a few inches away and left it undocumented.

Wiring:
If you have a older ASRock board, wire based on the bottom pinout. If you are missing the CIR port and have the IR header on your board, the top pinout may work for you. I did this on a z87m extreme4 and used one of the quick connect usb headers that come with MB's.

pin3: +5v
pin2: GND
pin1: IRRX

Once wired and plugged in, boot to BIOS turn off Infrared under Super I/O for CIR option to appear. This may require a restart after this change for the CIR option to show.

Boot to windows, download and install:
Nuvoton(v2.9.1007) - drivers
cir_allvista_allwin7_v2.1.2009.0619_pv - Program to assign wake up.
"Microsoft eHome Infrared Receiver" driver may need to be added to device manager.

Once you do that you should be able to start controlling windows and XBMC.
To add further control, head over to the Advanced MCE Remote Mapper Tool http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=164252 thread and customize your control.

I also recommend ww.autohotkey.com to create macros to launch and close programs.

ECS motherboards still have a CIR header. It might be interesting to do the same for ECS.

If it has the Nuvoton chipset on it, I would image it would work the same.

The Inteset manual shows the ECS pinout so it might just be a matter of wiring it according to this: http://shop.inteset.com/downloadfiles/In...9-9-13.pdf

ECS uses the Fintek eHome Transceiver driver
