What did you use to write the USB stick? Perhaps try another one. They are cheap and you certainly don't need speed or 8G. Once you've installed openelec you can repurpose it back to other duties.

I ran the batch file contained in the .tar file for latest generic version of OpenElec

Still no luck booting from USB. What am I missing! How have others managed to do this?

I have tried a couple of different USB sticks, in different USB ports and updated my BIOS to 38, 39.

Getting fed up with it now.

@HTfreak / anyone else who has installed OpenElec on one of these devices via usb -

Please can you tell me what bios you are on and what usb flash drive you used? And in the bios do you have legacy turned on and uefi off?

I want to try to replicate your working solution.

Otherwise I have a large paperweight here that I'm going to have to try to return.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I dont really remember how i did the USB install but i had no issue with it as far as i can remember:
- i downloaded the correct version of openelec (last stable build) on my PC
- i formatted the USB stick (fat32 i think) only 1 partition
- i ran the openelec install stuff
- i updated my NUC BIOS to the last BIOS version i found on the Intel web site
- i plugged the USB stick, booted the nuc on the USB stick ans it took about 30 seconds to install (i have optical fiber)
- rebooted the nuc and it worked...
