My audio system is 2-channel and downmixing 5.1 to 2 with xbmc (or any other player) sounds very noticeably worse than a native 2-channel mix. Dialogue in particular becomes difficult to discern. I used to use a long series of parameters with mplayer to help alleviate this but I didn't take notes on that unfortunately. Is there anything I can do if no native 2-channel mix is included in the mux and I want to stick with 2 speakers?

Depending on the version you are running, disable "Normalize volumes" in the advanced audio settings.
If you are running a helix nightly, enable: "Keep original volume on downmix"
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.
