Linux 3.5mm to 5.1 Dolby Digital out
#1
I have an old laptop which has a 3.5mm audio out jack. Can I somehow pass 5.1 Dolby Digital audio through to my reciever? If so, using which cable? Thanks for any help.

no.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I just found this : http://www.techspot.com/community/topics...ck.198750/
I don't know if it will work, but no harm in finding out.

Only if the 3.5mm jack is one of the combined optical/analogue ones (which old MacBooks used to have) Most 3.5mm jacks are analogue only on laptops though.

You can usually tell by holding your hand near the socket in a darkened room. If you see a dim red light reflected on your skin it's likely to have an optical output!
