i3-3220T. Definitely in Gotham - Helix I have yet to test PVR stuff on.

I would suggest turning off Hardware accelerated decoding in settings > video > acceleration. And switching to software and see if the problem goes away.

You don't need a lot of grunt to playback 1080i MPEG2 Live TV. XBMC can happily do it in software.
Even my lowly ATV1 with a 1Ghz Pentium-M can do 1080i MPEG2 software decoding in XBMC Gotham, with quality de-interlacing.

But I wonder how many cycles you save by using hardware acceleration. Like if the server is both playing video and streaming multiple live tv streams to other client machines at the same time, you might need the extra horsepower then if hardware acceleration makes a significant differece.

Just curious if you know, I'm too lazy to test it myself.

Using the ol 1Ghz - 256MB ATV1 running Linux Ubuntu 12.04.5 and using this as a TvHeadend backend server....

I'm seeing max 12% load by the TvHeadend process on the CPU whilst serving two 1080i MPEG2 streams. I then can still play a recorded MPEG2 HD stream on the same ATV1 using software decoding only as MPEG2 is not highly compressed video, unlike H264.

I also found there was an impressive decrease in CPU load using software decoding only for MPEG2 live streams when moving from XBMC Frodo to Gotham. I suspect the bump to v1.2 of FFMPEG had something to do with it.

The reason I asked was when the OP said they noticed a quality improvement from Gotham to Helix, and then fuirther information from other people was that sometimes SW can be better than HW Accelerated, i was wondering whether Helix does have some deinterlacing quality benefit out of the box or whether it's actually that the OP was somehow using SW method under Helix whilst under Gotham they were using HW Acceleration, whether accidentally or on purpose

I agree turning off hardware acceleration and using software on Gotham AFTV greatly improved Live TV from ServerWMC.
