this might not be the target of this project, but as you already have a ftp and a http server running with xbmc, it might be an interesting idea:

xbmc is already much more than an mediaplayer, as it offers some network services... i would love to see additional services you need for your private network (without having to install linux). the most important (missing) is the ability to download email from pop3 or imap servers on the net and save them on the box, so you can read them from any pc connected to your lan.

what do you think?

[sorry, this should be a feature sugesstion, can anybody move the post - thank you]

just set up one of the pcs on the lan as a mail server. the xbox has few enough resources without having to run pop3 / smtp / imap.

i have a linux installation (xebian) on my xbox running a webserver (apache), an email server (cyrus + webfrontend - opengroupware), freevo (a linux mediaplayer software) and all the stuff xebian starts per default.

i can play avis while having all the software running in the background... so it should not be a problem.

but, as the developers already decided not to implement it, this is of no importance   Sad .

xebian probably doesn't have a fancy graphical front end though... [Image: tounge.gif]

freevo is the fancy graphical frontend [Image: tounge.gif] ... everything could be that easy if linux would boot in 5 seconds Big Grin
