Just set up kodi on Fire TV, unfortunately I can't root it, firmware too new.

Added an SMB share and the movies all added and scraped.
Problem is I can't play them.

Don't need to root it, kodi plays fantastic on firetv

Is your smb share on pc shared to everyone, should check users on your shares and add the name everyone to it with permissions

smb share on MacMini with xbmc/xbmc user credentials (User account with share profile only)
Guest account ticked on Allow access to shares

Thing is before I added the smb share correctly, I couldn't connect, but now it can, as it has added all the movies within the share.

Problem is it does not play the movie file, either from main menu>Video>files or main menu>Movies
