Is directsound the same as the use of the ASIO driver?

No as Directsound is the api that sends audio through the Windows mixer layers, so ASIO was needed for Win XP since Directsound was the only option. However from Vista onwards a second audio api was introduced that talks directly with the audio device driver bypassing the Windows mixer layers, this is the WASAPI api.

The manufacturer of my sound device tells me that the ASIO driver sounds better than the WASAPI driver. Can I use ASIO with Kodi?

No you can't as ASIO is proprietary and by the way your sound card manufacturer is talking bollocks, WASAPI can pass bitperfect audio so how exactly do you get better than that?
