is it possible to use the divx dlls to playback divx and xvid files instead of the ones used by mplayer (libavi i guess)?

no, its not. since we use mplayer as core xbmc will use the (build in) codec set in codecs.conf to play the video.
normaly we would say turn to mplayer own devs for a such codec request, (see http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin....;t=1921 ), but in the case of divx it's probebely better begging the devs at divxnetworks, inc. to add decode dll support to mplayer
who knows, if enough people write/post in divx's own foruum asking for it then they just might cave in and implement it
