i have a computer with 512 mb of RAM and it cant run xbmc smoothly at all. If i add RAM will it make it run good?

yeah more detailed specs are needed, just what do you have in mind for the system?

Also running Live instead of Windows will dramatically reduce RAM requirements.

get about 1gb min or 2gb and you will notice a difference if using live. make sure your gfx card supports vdpau also.
