Anyway I don't care for Netflix or hulu or amazon prime content. All I care is Kodi and over the air local channels.

Why do you need to root? Xbmc works fine without root.

Can you tell us what backend TV decoder / server you are using to feed over the air Live TV streams into the AFTV pls. ?
(Note this is different Interlaced video, compared to live TV streams over the internet)
